Calling All Poets!

April 14, 2021

In honor of National Poetry Month, we invite you to create a didactic cinquain shape poem using a piece from our collection for your inspiration.

Using a five-lined format and only 11 words total, a cinquain challenges the poet to look deeply and make every word count.

Line One: One noun to identify the subject of the piece
Line Two: Two adjectives describing the subject
Line Three: Three verbs ending in -ing that detail action in the work
Line Four: Four-word phrase that captures the feeling or emotion in the piece
Line Five: One different, very specific, noun

Examples:

sailboat
breezy, blue
adventuring, imagining, exploring
scalawag raises warning flag
pirate
saturday
rumpled, spare
sleeping, dreaming, growing
nestled deep under blankets
teenager
